What to Expect During a Breath Alcohol Test

A breath alcohol test sounds intimidating if you’ve never had one, but it’s actually one of the quickest and least invasive tests you can take. Here’s exactly what happens from the moment you walk in.

Before the test

There’s very little you need to do to prepare. Bring a valid photo ID and any forms your employer provided. The technician will ask you not to eat, drink, smoke or put anything in your mouth for about 15 minutes beforehand — this prevents residual mouth alcohol from affecting the reading.

The screening test

Your test is performed by a qualified Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) using an approved Evidential Breath Testing (EBT) device. The steps are simple:

  1. The technician confirms your identity and explains the process.
  2. You blow steadily into a clean, single-use mouthpiece.
  3. The device displays a result within seconds.

If your result is below 0.02, the test is complete and you’re cleared. For most people, that’s the entire process — in and out in just a few minutes.

The confirmation test

If the screening result is 0.02 or higher, a confirmation test is required. The technician waits at least 15 minutes (this actually works in your favor by clearing any mouth alcohol), then runs a second test. The confirmation result is the one that’s officially reported.

The waiting period before a confirmation test isn’t a delay tactic — it’s a safeguard that ensures the result is accurate and fair.

How results are reported

Results are recorded on a federal alcohol testing form and shared with your employer’s designated representative according to DOT or company procedures. Your privacy is respected throughout, and the test is conducted in a discreet, professional setting.

Common questions

  • Does it hurt? Not at all — you simply breathe into a mouthpiece.
  • How long does it take? Usually under five minutes unless a confirmation test is needed.
  • Can mouthwash affect it? It can temporarily, which is exactly why the 15-minute wait and confirmation step exist.
